Two Bodies Recovered from Indonesia Plane Wreckage
Antara news agency published details from a military statement confirming that joint search and rescue (SAR) teams discovered the victims within the fuselage and tail portions of the downed aircraft.
Brig. Gen. Donny Pramono, head of the Indonesian Army Information Service, explained that recovery crews utilized mountaineering techniques to transport the remains overland after severe weather prevented helicopter operations. Dense fog and powerful winds made aerial extraction impossible.
"Despite extremely challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions, rescue teams have continued their efforts in a disciplined and coordinated manner," he added.
The ATR 42-500 turboprop, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, vanished from radar Saturday during a flight from Yogyakarta to Makassar, the provincial capital. The aircraft went missing over Maros district.
Search crews located wreckage Sunday. Eleven people were aboard the flight—eight crew members and three passengers. Recovery operations continue as teams work to locate the remaining nine individuals in the mountainous crash zone.
